Electrolux E06 microwave: what it means & what to check

What E06 actually means

The microwave's inverter power board has seen more current than it should and has shut the machine down to protect itself.

These are inverter microwaves rather than the older transformer type, and the control constantly watches the current the inverter is drawing. If that current signal stays above its limit for even a fraction of a second during heating, the oven aborts the cycle and puts E06 on the display instead of carrying on. It is a protective trip, so the oven will usually still light up and let you press buttons \it \ that is normal, and it does not mean the fault has cleared.

What usually causes it

A magnetron drawing excessive current as it breaks down
Running the oven empty or with very little food in it, so the energy has nowhere to go
Poor or unstable mains supply, or sharing an overloaded socket
A one-off nuisance trip after a power cut or surge

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the microwave off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short heating run with a cup of water in it \ if it was a one-off trip it will clear.
Make sure there is always food or liquid inside before starting a heating programme; running it empty can push the inverter into over-current.
Plug it straight into a wall socket on its own rather than through an extension lead or shared adaptor.
Check the vents around the casing are not blocked or covered.
