What E08 actually means

The fridge freezer has detected that the electricity reaching it is too low, so it has flagged a low-voltage fault rather than risk running the compressor.

On these Electrolux frost-free fridge freezers the control board watches the incoming mains supply. If it drops below what the compressor and fans need, the board shows this code on the display and holds off cooling to protect the compressor motor from trying to start on inadequate voltage. It is a supply-side complaint, not a sign the cooling system itself has failed.

What usually causes it

  • Genuinely low or unstable mains voltage in the house
  • Extension lead, adaptor or multi-way block between the appliance and the socket
  • A poor or loose connection at the plug or wall socket
  • Faulty mains socket or circuit feeding that part of the kitchen
  • A fault in the appliance's own control or display board misreading the supply

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Plug the appliance straight into a wall socket on its own, not through an extension lead or adaptor
  2. Check whether other appliances on the same circuit are dimming, tripping or behaving oddly
  3. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, and see whether the code clears
  4. If you use a generator, inverter or voltage stabiliser, note that these often trigger this code

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
