What E09 actually means

The freezer has been warmer than -9", so the fridge is warning you it isn't cold enough.

The control board watches the freezer temperature and raises this alarm if it stays above roughly -9\u00b0C for 20 minutes or more. The display flashes E09, the alarm light blinks and it beeps. It doesn't stop the appliance running \u2014 it's telling you the freezer has lost temperature, and it will clear itself once the set temperature is reached again.

What usually causes it

  • An empty or nearly empty freezer going through a defrost cycle \u2014 harmless and needs no repair
  • A door left open or not sealing properly
  • A large load of warm or fresh food put in recently
  • Food or packaging blocking the air vents inside, or sitting against the temperature sensor
  • A genuine cooling fault \u2014 fan, defrost system or sealed system problem

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Press any button to silence the alarm
  2. Check both doors shut fully and the seals aren't dirty or trapped on packaging
  3. Move food away from the vents at the back of the compartments, and don't pack it against the sensor
  4. Switch on Extra Freeze (or Fast Freeze) to pull the temperature back down
  5. Give it a few hours to recover, then see if the code clears
  6. If it doesn't clear, turn it off at the wall for a minute and back on

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
