Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E01 actually means

The fridge freezer has lost a reliable reading from the freezer's temperature sensor, so it can't tell how cold the freezer actually is.

E01 means the freezer temperature sensor is reading as short circuited or disconnected. Without a trustworthy reading, the control board can't run the cooling cycle properly, so it flags the fault and falls back to a fixed running pattern or stops cooling correctly. Food temperatures may drift, in either direction, until it's put right.

What E01 looks like on a Electrolux fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux fridge freezer, E01 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should
  • Not cooling
  • Freezer not freezing
  • Ice building up at the back
  • Food going off in the fridge
  • Running constantly and never getting cold

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Failed freezer temperature sensor
  • Loose or corroded plug on the sensor wiring
  • Damaged sensor cable, often where it passes into the cabinet
  • Fault on the main control board
  • Moisture or ice build-up around the sensor connection

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on — occasionally the code clears if it was a one-off glitch
  2. Check the doors are closing fully and the seals aren't holding them ajar, as constant warm air makes icing worse
  3. Check a thermometer or the food itself to see whether the freezer is still holding temperature

Which Electrolux models show E01

E01 means the same thing on all 21 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
