Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E48 actually means

The machine thinks the door lock is still holding shut when it should have released, so it has stopped the cycle and forced the door open.

Electrolux washers lock the door with a heated wax element (a PTC) rather than a simple solenoid. The control board monitors that lock's status; if it reports "locked" for seven minutes when the board is not powering it at all, the machine assumes the lock or its feedback circuit has failed. It abandons the cycle and releases the door, because a lock it cannot control is a safety problem.

What usually causes it

  • Failed door lock assembly (the wax/PTC element stuck in the locked state)
  • Faulty feedback wiring or connector between lock and control board
  • Door catch or striker holding the mechanism under strain so it cannot release
  • Control board fault misreading the lock's status

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a short cycle — a one-off glitch will clear
  2. Check nothing (laundry, a trapped sock, a stiff rubber seal) is pushing against the door as it shuts, and that the door closes and opens freely without being forced

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
