Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E52 actually means

The control board has lost the signal that tells it how fast the drum motor is turning, so it shuts the motor down.

Electrolux washer dryers use a small sensor on the motor (the tachometer) to feed drum speed back to the control board. If that signal goes missing or comes through unreliably while the motor is running, the board cuts power to the motor and parks the machine in a safe state. The software doesn't give up straight away — it retries five times, with cooling pauses in between, and on some cycles it will attempt to finish using a gentler drum action. Once those retries are exhausted the code is stored and the machine stops, and it stays stopped until the power is switched off or the cycle is reset.

What E52 looks like on a Electrolux washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux washer dryer, E52 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or dirty plug on the motor's speed sensor — the single most common finding
  • A failed tachometer coil on the motor
  • Damaged or chafed wiring between the motor and the control board
  • Electrical interference confusing the speed signal
  • A faulty motor control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Switch the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and start a short cycle — the code needs a full power-off or cycle reset to clear, and if it was a one-off signal glitch it may not return
  2. Note whether the drum turns at all, or turns slowly and unevenly, before stopping — that's useful information for whoever attends

Which Electrolux models show E52

E52 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

What does E52 mean on a Electrolux washer dryer?

Can I fix Electrolux E52 myself?

There are 2 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Switch the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and start a short cycle — the code needs a full power-off or cycle reset to clear, and if it was a one-off signal glitch it may not return.
  2. Note whether the drum turns at all, or turns slowly and unevenly, before stopping — that's useful information for whoever attends.
