Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F08 actually means

The machine has detected the motor drawing too much current and has cut the drum motor to protect itself.

The control board watches how much current the motor pulls while the drum is turning. If it spikes beyond the safe limit the machine drops out and shows this code. It will wait around half a minute and try again, but if the same overcurrent happens ten times in the one programme it gives up and locks the fault in.

What usually causes it

  • Washing caught in the door seal, jamming the drum as it turns
  • Drum overloaded or a heavy item wrapped tight on one side
  • Motor or drum stiff to turn ",
  • ,
  • Fault in the inverter drive circuitry on the main board
  • Failing motor winding drawing excess current

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch on and restart the programme
  2. Once the door releases, check nothing is trapped between the door seal and the drum \u2014 this is the first thing we look for on this fault
  3. Take some washing out and redistribute the rest, especially if you had one heavy item like a duvet or towels
  4. Turn the drum by hand with the machine off \u2014 it should spin freely without grinding or catching

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
