What F56 actually means
The machine tried to spin at the end of the cycle but never got the drum above 400 rpm, so it gave up and flagged it.
Miele's control board watches the drum speed during the final spin. If it can't reach roughly 400 rpm it stops and shows F56 rather than carry on with a load that hasn't been spun. The usual sign for you is washing that comes out soaking wet, or a drum that clearly rocks and slows instead of building up speed.
What F56 looks like on a Miele washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Miele washer dryer, F56 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water

What usually causes it
- An unbalanced load — one heavy item, or a bundle that has knotted itself to one side of the drum
- Overloading, or a small load of a single towel or duvet that the machine can't balance
- A worn or failing motor, including worn carbon brushes on models fitted with them
- Wiring or connection problems between the control board and the motor
- Drive fault such as a failing speed sensor feeding the board the wrong reading
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart it — if it was purely an unbalanced load it will often spin normally afterwards
- Open the door and redistribute the washing by hand, spreading it evenly around the drum before running a spin
- Take some out if the drum is packed tight, or add a couple of items if you're spinning a single heavy piece like a towel or a duvet
- Check the machine is sitting level and solid on the floor and isn't rocking when it tries to spin
- Clean the drain filter and check the drain hose isn't kinked, so water is leaving properly before the spin starts
