Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E03 actually means

The machine can't get the water out — either the pump filter is blocked or the drain pump itself has failed.

Montpellier's control board watches for the drum emptying when the drain pump runs. If the water level doesn't drop as expected, it flags E03 and stops rather than carrying on to the spin, which is why you'll typically find the drum still full and the clothes soaked. The same code is used in the factory autotest, where step 2 fires the drain pump on its own and reports E03 if it doesn't perform.

What E03 looks like on a Montpellier washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier washer dryer, E03 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Overfilling, or won't stop filling
  • Stops with water still inside
  • Fills and drains over and over
  • No function at all

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Blocked pump filter — fluff, coins, hair grips and bits of tissue
  • Kinked, trapped or badly routed drain hose behind the machine
  • Blockage in the household waste pipe or sink trap the hose empties into
  • Drain pump jammed by a small object or worn out
  • Fault in the pump wiring or the control board's pump output

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall and leave it a minute, then switch back on and try a drain or spin programme
  2. Open the pump filter flap at the bottom front, drain the water into a shallow tray and clean the filter thoroughly (see page 21 of your manual) — expect a fair amount of water
  3. Check the drain hose isn't kinked, squashed behind the machine or pushed too far down the standpipe
  4. If the hose empties into a sink trap, check that isn't blocked with grease
  5. Run a short empty cycle to see whether the code returns

Which Montpellier models show E03

E03 means the same thing on all 8 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Montpellier E03

What does E03 mean on a Montpellier washer dryer?

The machine can't get the water out — either the pump filter is blocked or the drain pump itself has failed. Montpellier's control board watches for the drum emptying when the drain pump runs. If the water level doesn't drop as expected, it flags E03 and stops rather than carrying on to the spin, which is why you'll typically find the drum still full and the clothes soaked. The same code is used in the factory autotest, where step 2 fires the drain pump on its own and reports E03 if it doesn't perform.

Can I fix Montpellier E03 myself?

There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall and leave it a minute, then switch back on and try a drain or spin programme.
  2. Open the pump filter flap at the bottom front, drain the water into a shallow tray and clean the filter thoroughly (see page 21 of your manual) — expect a fair amount of water.
  3. Check the drain hose isn't kinked, squashed behind the machine or pushed too far down the standpipe.
  4. If the hose empties into a sink trap, check that isn't blocked with grease.
  5. Run a short empty cycle to see whether the code returns.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
