What E04 actually means

The machine has found more water in the drum than it should have, so it has cut the programme short and pumped the water out to avoid a flood.

Montpellier washer dryers run an overflow protection routine that watches the water level throughout the cycle. If the level goes above what the programme expects, the control board stops the wash, starts the drain pump and shows this code, holding the level down until you deal with it. The example of what triggers it is a water inlet valve that has stuck open, so the machine keeps filling even when it hasn't asked for water.

What usually causes it

An inlet valve stuck part-open, so water keeps trickling in even between fills
Too much detergent, giving a mass of foam that reads as an excessive water level
A pressure sensing hose blocked, split or full of sludge, giving a false high level
Faulty control board misreading the water level
Drain restriction leaving water behind so each fill pushes the level too high

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the water tap off at the wall, switch the machine off for a minute, then switch it back on ut with the tap shut. If the drum keeps taking water with the tap off it isn't a valve; if it stops, a valve sticking open is likely.
Clean the pump filter behind the flap at the bottom front, following the instructions in your manual, and check the drain hose isn't kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe.
If you have been using a lot of detergent, or a non-machine cleaning product, cut the dose right back ut foam is a common trigger.
Run a short rinse and spin with an empty drum and watch whether the water level rises above the door glass.
