What E06 actually means

The machine has stopped because the control board isn't getting the drum motor to turn, or isn't getting the feedback from it that it expects.

On these Montpellier washer dryers, E06 is logged as a motor failure. The board drives the motor and watches its speed feedback; if the drum doesn't turn as commanded, or the speed signal doesn't add up, the cycle is halted rather than allowed to continue. In practice you'll usually see the drum sitting still with water in it, or the machine failing the moment it tries to build up to spin speed.

What E06 looks like on a Montpellier washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier washer dryer, E06 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Worn motor brushes or a worn motor on older machines
  • A loose or damaged plug on the motor wiring
  • Failed speed sensor (tacho) feedback from the motor
  • A fault in the motor control side of the main board
  • Drum jammed or badly overloaded so the motor is stalling

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and restart a short cycle — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear.
  2. Take some of the washing out if the drum is packed tight, and try again on a small load.
  3. With the machine switched off at the wall, turn the drum by hand — it should rotate freely. If it grinds, catches or won't move, don't run it again.
  4. Check nothing has slipped behind the drum through the seal, such as a coin or an underwire, which can lock the drum.

E06 means the same thing on all 8 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
