Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E09 actually means

The machine has detected that the mains electricity reaching it is outside the range it's designed to run on, so it has stopped the cycle.

E09 is a voltage fault. The control board constantly monitors the incoming supply, and if the voltage drops too low or rises too high it halts the programme to protect the motor and electronics. Sometimes the supply really is at fault; other times the machine is being fed through something that distorts the voltage, or the board's own monitoring circuit has failed.

What usually causes it

  • Low or unstable mains voltage in the house or area
  • Running the machine through an extension lead, adaptor or travel/site supply
  • A poor connection at the socket or plug
  • Other heavy appliances on the same circuit dragging the voltage down
  • Fault on the machine's own control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme
  2. Plug the machine directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead or multi-way adaptor
  3. Try a different wall socket on another circuit if one is within reach of the hoses
  4. Note whether lights elsewhere in the house dim or flicker, or whether other appliances are also playing up it's worth mentioning to your electricity supplier

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
