Neff E13 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E13 actually means

The machine has tried to pump the water out and hasn't managed it, so it has stopped with the drum still holding water.

E13 on a Neff washer points at the drain pump. The control board expects the water level to fall once the pump runs at the end of a wash or before a spin; when that doesn't happen it halts the cycle and shows the code rather than trying to spin a drum full of water. In practice it's split fairly evenly between a pump that is blocked by debris and a pump that has actually failed.

What E13 looks like on a Neff washing machine

What usually causes it

Coins, hair grips, buttons or fluff jammed in the pump so the impeller can't turn
A blocked or clogged pump filter
Drain hose kinked, squashed behind the machine or blocked
Blocked sink trap or standpipe the drain hose empties into
Worn-out or seized drain pump needing replacement

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Pull the machine forward gently and check the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped or crushed
If the hose runs into a sink waste or standpipe, check that isn't blocked or slow-draining
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and select a drain or spin programme to see if the code returns
If your model has a filter flap you can open at the front without tools, clean the filter out (put a towel and a shallow tray down first, water will come out)
