Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F18 actually means

The machine hasn't managed to pump the water out in time, so it has stopped with the drum still full.

F18 is a drain fault on Neff (and the related Bosch and Siemens) machines. The control board expects the water level to drop once the drain pump runs; when it doesn't drop within the expected time, the cycle halts and the door stays locked with water inside. You'll usually notice it at the end of a wash or as the machine tries to start spinning.

What F18 looks like on a Neff washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Neff washing machine, F18 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Blocked pump filter cocoins, hair clips and buttons
  • Kinked or blocked waste hose, or a blocked sink trap/spigot the hose drains into
  • Debris jammed in the pump itself or in the sump hose
  • A damaged pump impeller, so the pump runs but shifts no water
  • Failed drain pump needing replacement

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power back up and try a drain or spin co this sometimes clears a one-off
  2. Bail out what water you can and clean the pump filter behind the kick panel flap at the bottom front, checking for coins and debris
  3. Check the waste hose behind the machine isn't kinked, trapped or pushed too far down the standpipe
  4. If it drains into a sink trap, check that outlet isn't blocked co a blanking cap or crosshair left in the sink spigot is a classic cause
  5. Run a hot wash once it drains to clear grease and fibre from the sump

Can I fix Neff F18 myself?

There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power back up and try a drain or spin co this sometimes clears a one-off.
  2. Bail out what water you can and clean the pump filter behind the kick panel flap at the bottom front, checking for coins and debris.
  3. Check the waste hose behind the machine isn't kinked, trapped or pushed too far down the standpipe.
  4. If it drains into a sink trap, check that outlet isn't blocked co a blanking cap or crosshair left in the sink spigot is a classic cause.
  5. Run a hot wash once it drains to clear grease and fibre from the sump.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
