What E61 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is properly locked, so it won't start or continue the wash.

On Neff machines (and the Bosch/Siemens models built alongside them) E61 is one of a family of door interlock faults, along with E01, F08, F16 and F34. The control board sends power to the lock and waits for confirmation that it has engaged; if that confirmation doesn't come back, the cycle is halted before water goes in. Sometimes the door genuinely isn't shut properly, but more often the lock itself has failed internally or its wiring connection has gone bad.

What E61 looks like on a Neff washing machine

What usually causes it

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Open the door and close it again firmly, listening for the catch to click.
Check nothing is caught in the door seal or hanging over the lip \u2014 a towel corner is enough to stop it locking.
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme.
Look at the catch on the door itself \u2014 if it looks bent, worn or loose, that points straight at the lock assembly.
