What F21 actually means
The machine can't drive the drum properly, so it has stopped and flagged a motor fault.
The control board tells the motor to turn the drum at a set speed and watches that it actually does. When the drum doesn't respond as expected — no rotation, erratic turning, or a failed spin — the board gives up and shows F21. On Bosch-built machines (which is what a Neff washer is under the badge) this is a motor-side fault rather than a water or drainage one.
What F21 looks like on a Neff washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Neff washing machine, F21 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
- Turns one way only
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Worn motor carbon brushes — by far the most common on these machines
- A jammed or obstructed drum, e.g. A garment or coin wedged out of the drum
- Motor wiring or connection fault between the board and the motor
- Failed control module driving the motor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back on and try a short cycle — a one-off glitch will clear.
- Take the load out and turn the empty drum by hand. It should spin freely; if it grinds, catches or won't move, don't run it again.
- Check nothing is trapped between the drum and the tub — a loose bra wire or coin can stall it.
