Neff E01 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E01 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is properly locked, so it won't start the cycle.

Before a Neff washer will take water, it has to get a signal back from the door interlock saying the door is shut and latched. E01 is one of the door lock family of codes on Bosch-built machines (alongside F08, F16, F34 and E61) and means that confirmation never arrived. The drum stays empty and the programme stops before it really begins.

What E01 looks like on a Neff washing machine

Machine door won't open
Door won't lock or click shut
Door lock light flashing
Door stuck shut with the load inside
Won't start even with the door closed

What usually causes it

Failed door interlock the most common finding by far
Door not quite pushed home, or laundry trapped in the seal
Worn or dropped door hinge so the catch no longer lines up
Broken plastic latch tongue on the door itself
Wiring or connection fault at the lock

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Take everything out, close the door firmly and listen for the click, then restart
Check no clothing or the rubber seal is caught between door and frame
Look at the plastic catch on the door for obvious damage
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on some models clear a one-off lock fault this way
