What F04 actually means
The dishwasher can't get a reliable reading of how much water it's taking in, so it stops rather than carry on blind.
Rather than filling for a set time, these machines meter the incoming water with a flowmeter — a small paddle wheel in the inlet path that counts the water passing through. If the control board sees no pulses, or a reading that doesn't match what it expects while filling, it flags F04 and abandons the cycle. On the display models you'll normally see it early on, with little or no water in the tub; the fault is usually either the flowmeter itself or its wiring plug rather than anything you've done wrong.
What F04 looks like on a New World dishwasher

- No water going in

What usually causes it
- Flowmeter has failed or its paddle is stuck with limescale or debris
- Loose or damaged plug on the flowmeter wiring
- Water supply turned off, or a kinked or crushed inlet hose starving the fill
- Blocked filter in the inlet hose connection at the tap end
- Control board not reading the flowmeter signal correctly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check the water supply tap behind or under the unit is fully open.
- Look along the inlet hose for kinks or crushing where the machine sits back against the wall.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and start a short programme to see whether the code returns.
- Clean the filters in the base of the tub and refit them properly — worth doing anyway before an engineer visits.
