What F09 actually means

The dishwasher has lost track of the valve that switches water between the upper and lower spray arms, and has stopped the programme rather than carry on washing blind.

These machines feed the top and bottom spray arms in turn using a diverter valve inside the sump. The control board expects that valve to move to a known position and report back; when it doesn't arrive where it should, the board flags the diverter fault and halts. Typical symptoms before the code appears are one basket coming out dirty while the other is fine, or the wash sounding as though the water pressure keeps dropping.

What F09 looks like on a New World dishwasher

What usually causes it

The diverter valve motor has failed or is jammed by debris in the sump
Grease and limescale build-up stopping the diverter moving freely
A wiring or connector fault between the diverter and the control board
A faulty position sensor on the diverter, so the board never sees it reach its stop
Control board fault (less common, and often blamed wrongly)

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up and run a short programme — on these models the diverter re-homes itself at power-on, and a one-off glitch can clear
Take out the filter assembly in the base, rinse it under the tap and clear any debris from the recess it sits in
Spin both spray arms by hand to check they turn freely and the holes are not blocked
Make sure no tall item, tray or utensil handle is fouling a spray arm so it can't rotate
Run a hot cycle with dishwasher cleaner if the machine has had a build-up of grease
