Zanussi E52 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E52 actually means

The dryer's motor has got too hot and its built-in safety cut-out has tripped, so the machine has pulled power from the heater and stopped the drum reversing.

There is a thermal cut-out fitted to the drum motor. When it trips, the control board cuts the heater and stops the reversing action rather than letting the motor cook itself. If it was a one-off the fault is stored and the cycle carries on, but if the motor keeps cutting out over roughly 35 minutes of retries the board escalates to E51 and the cycle stops for good. On the ENV06 boards used across the Zanussi and Electrolux group dryers, this family of faults shows as five green flashes followed by red ones as well as the code itself.

What E52 looks like on a Zanussi tumble dryer

What usually causes it

Motor overheating because airflow is restricted by a blocked lint filter or clogged condenser
A tired start capacitor, which usually gives a loud hum with the drum not turning properly
Worn motor windings or worn brushes, so the motor draws too much current and overheats
Damaged or loose wiring to the motor
Faulty control board (less common than the motor itself)

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Switch off at the wall and leave the dryer for half an hour or more — the motor cut-out needs to cool before it will reset
Clean the lint filter thoroughly, including rinsing it if it is furred with fabric softener residue
Rinse out the condenser filter block at the bottom of the machine if your model has one, and clear any fluff from its housing
Make sure the room is ventilated and the machine is not tucked hard against a wall or shut in a cupboard so it recirculates its own hot air
Try a smaller load — a heavy, tightly packed drum makes the motor work far harder
If you can hear a hum but the drum is not turning freely, stop the cycle and leave it for an engineer
