What is actually happening
An RCD trips when current leaks to earth. When a machine trips it the moment it is switched on, the leak is usually in the mains filter or the wiring. When it only trips once the wash warms up, it is nearly always the heating element, which has cracked and is leaking to earth as soon as it energises — the timing is the diagnosis.
The Candy fault codes that point at this
A Candy washing machine will usually tell you what it thinks is wrong before anyone opens it up. These are the codes we hold for this make that relate to tripping the electrics:
- E05 — The washing machine can't get a sensible reading from the sensor that measures water temperature, so it stops rather than heat blindly.
- E08 — The control board isn't getting a sensible speed signal back from the motor, so it shuts the cycle down rather than run the drum blind.
- E09 — The main circuit board that drives the drum motor has failed, so the machine cuts out rather than run the motor.
- E11 — The machine has lost the electrical circuit it needs to heat the air for drying, so it stops rather than run a dry cycle that would never get warm.
- E12 — The drying part of the cycle isn't heating up — the drum is turning but the air going through it is staying cold, so the machine stops and flags it.
- E14 — The machine has decided the water isn't heating up as it should, and has stopped the cycle rather than carry on washing cold.
- E16 — The washing machine has detected an electrical fault in the water heating element and has shut the cycle down to protect itself.
- E22 — The machine has decided something is wrong with the water heating circuit and has stopped rather than carry on with a wash it cannot heat.

The usual causes on a Candy washing machine

- A failed mains interference filter — trips the instant it is switched on
- Water ingress onto wiring from a leak elsewhere in the machine
- A failed motor or damaged cable

- Try a cold wash: if a 30°C cycle completes and a 60°C one trips, it is the element
- Leave the machine unplugged if it trips the house repeatedly — this one is not worth living with
