What C02 actually means

C02 isn't a fault \u2014 it's the middle of a three-second countdown while the child lock is being switched on or off.

When you hold the 1st and 2nd auxiliary function buttons down together, the display counts C03, C02, C01 to show the three seconds passing. At the end you'll see "Con" if the child lock has been turned on, or "COF" if it has been turned off. Nothing is wrong with the machine \u2014 something has been leaning on or pressing those two buttons.

What usually causes it

  • Buttons held down deliberately to set the child lock
  • Something resting against the control panel pressing two buttons at once
  • A child pressing buttons while the machine runs
  • Child lock already on, so the machine flashes the same countdown when other buttons are touched

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Let go of the buttons and see what the display settles on \u2014 "Con" means child lock on, "COF" means off
  2. To clear the child lock, hold the 1st and 2nd auxiliary function buttons together for three seconds until "COF" appears
  3. If no programme is running, turn the programme knob to On/Off and select another programme \u2014 that also clears the child lock
  4. Move anything leaning against the control panel
  5. Bear in mind the child lock stays on after a power cut or unplugging, so switching off at the wall won't clear it

When to call someone

This often clears with the checks above, and rarely needs an engineer. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
