Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E04 actually means

The machine has spotted a fault in the electronics that switch the water inlet valves, so it has stopped rather than risk filling uncontrollably.

The control board uses small electronic switches (triacs) to open and close the water inlet valves. E04 means one of those switches has failed shorted or is leaking current, so a valve could be held open and keep letting water in when it shouldn't. The machine shuts the cycle down to avoid overfilling and flooding.

What usually causes it

  • Failed valve switching component on the main control board
  • Faulty or short-circuited water inlet valve
  • Damp or corroded connection at the valve or control board
  • Water having got into the electronics after a leak

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on and see if the code returns
  2. Turn off the water taps at the wall if the machine is filling on its own

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
