What E18 actually means

The dryer's control board has lost communication with the drum motor's electronics, so it won't run.

Beko dryers of this type use a brushless (BLDC) motor with its own control electronics, and the main board talks to that motor circuit constantly while the drum turns. When the messages stop or come back wrong, the machine halts and shows E18 rather than risk running the motor blind. In practice the drum usually won't turn at all, or it stops shortly after you press start.

What E18 looks like on a Beko tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Beko tumble dryer, E18 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Fault in the motor control electronics
  • Loose or damaged connection between the control board and the motor
  • Failed main control board
  • Failing brushless drum motor
  • Electrical supply disturbance upsetting the boards

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on and try a short cycle — an occasional one-off communication glitch will clear
  2. Make sure the dryer is plugged straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead or adaptor
  3. Check the door is closing and latching properly so you can rule out a start-up problem being mistaken for this fault

Which Beko models show E18

E18 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
