Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E40 actually means

The drying side of your washer-dryer isn't getting enough air through it, so the machine has stopped the drying part of the cycle.

On Beko washer-dryers, drying relies on a process fan pushing air through a condenser and back into the drum. The control board monitors that airflow, and when it isn't there — or the fan doesn't run at all — it flags E40 and abandons the drying stage. The usual complaint is that washing finishes normally but comes out wet, the programme ends much earlier than the time shown, and the door glass and surround can feel unusually hot.

What usually causes it

  • The process fan has failed or isn't spinning
  • A faulty fan capacitor or fan wiring connection
  • Blocked condenser restricting the airflow
  • Fan thermal cut-out tripped after overheating
  • Fan relay on the control board gone open circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then try a short drying cycle to see if the code returns straight away
  2. Clean the pump filter at the bottom front and make sure the drain hose isn't kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe
  3. Try drying a smaller load — an overpacked drum restricts air movement and makes poor drying worse
  4. Check the machine isn't jammed tight against a wall or built into a sealed cupboard with no air around it

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
