What E44 actually means

On a Beko washer-dryer, this points at the small water valve that rinses out the condenser during drying he being blocked isn't clearing fluff away.

During the drying part of the cycle, the machine periodically flushes the condenser with water to wash away lint and help it shed heat. The control board has decided that flush isn't happening ot water isn't getering through the condenser washing valve, so it stops the programme rather than let the condenser clog and overheat. Washing normally still works; it is the drying side that fails.

What usually causes it

  • The condenser washing valve is blocked with scale or fluff
  • The valve has failed electrically and no longer opens
  • The condenser itself is clogged with lint, so water cannot pass through
  • Poor or restricted water supply to the machine
  • A fault on the control board circuit that drives the valve

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart to see if the code clears
  2. Check both taps are fully open and the inlet hoses are not kinked or trapped behind the machine
  3. Clean the pump filter at the bottom front and clear the fluff out of it
  4. Run a wash-only programme to confirm the fault is limited to drying

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
