What E01 actually means

The machine can't read the water temperature — the sensor that tells it how hot the water is has gone faulty or lost its connection.

E01 is the heater NTC fault: the control board is seeing either an open circuit or a short circuit on the temperature sensor that sits in the tub alongside the heating element. Because the board has no reliable temperature reading, it won't allow the heater to work, so you typically get cold washes, poor cleaning results, or a programme that drags on far longer than it should. On models without a digital display the same fault is signalled by a pattern on the spin speed lights rather than a code.

Less often, a fault on the control board itself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute and back on, then start a short cycle — an occasional one-off reading can clear
Note whether the wash water is cold and whether the programme is overrunning; that helps confirm it is the heating side and is useful information for the engineer
