What E04 actually means
The control board has lost control of the water inlet valve — the machine can keep filling with water even when it shouldn't be, so it stops the programme.
Water is let into the drum by electrically operated inlet valves, and those valves are switched by small components (triacs) on the main control board. E04 means the board has detected that the valve switching circuit has failed shorted or is behaving like a diode — in other words, stuck partly or fully on. The usual picture the owner sees is the machine filling continuously, no wash movement, the door locked shut and the programme never finishing.
What E04 looks like on a Blomberg washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Blomberg washing machine, E04 usually shows up as one or more of these:

What usually causes it
- A failed valve switching component on the main control board (by far the most common finding)
- Damage to the board caused by a water leak or damp reaching it
- A shorted or damaged water inlet valve coil dragging the circuit down
- Wiring or connector damage at the valve harness
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the water tap(s) behind the machine off — with this fault the machine can keep filling, so shutting off the supply is the sensible first move.
- Switch it off at the socket for a minute and back on. If E04 is a one-off glitch it may clear; if it returns straight away it is a real fault.
- If there is water in the drum and the door is locked, leave it — don't try to force the door.
