Blomberg E12 fridge freezer: what it means & what to check

What E12 actually means

The heater that melts frost off the cooling plate in the convertible freezer/larder compartment isn't reading correctly, so the fridge freezer has flagged it and stopped defrosting that section.

Blomberg's control board watches the defrost heater circuit in the switchable "freezer/larder" compartment. If it sees an open circuit or a short there, it puts up E12 along with the alarm indicator and gives up on running that defrost. The compartment usually keeps getting cold for a while, but frost slowly builds on the evaporator behind the back wall, airflow chokes off and temperatures start drifting up — that creeping loss of cooling is normally what brings people to look at the display in the first place.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Switch the appliance off at the socket for a minute and back on — if the fault has genuinely cleared, the code drops out on restart, and if it comes straight back you know it's a real fault.
Check the doors are closing fully and the seals aren't folded over or sticky, since warm moist air pulled in makes frosting far worse.
Make sure food and packaging aren't pressed against the back wall or blocking the vents inside that compartment.
If there's already heavy frost, empty the compartment and let it defrost fully with the appliance off — this won't fix E12, but it tells you how far things have gone.
