What E70 actually means

The machine thinks one of the buttons on the front is being held down, so it refuses to start.

The control board watches how long each button on the fascia is pressed. If it sees a single button — most often the power button — held for more than about ten seconds, it assumes something is wrong and shows this code instead of running. On these ElectriQ machines it is usually a mechanical problem: the button has stuck in the panel rather than springing back, so the board reads it as permanently pressed.

What usually causes it

  • Power button jammed or sitting proud in the fascia and not springing back
  • Detergent, dust or grime around the button making it stick
  • Fascia panel or button trim slightly out of line after a knock or a clean
  • Worn button contact or fault on the control board behind the fascia

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and see if the code clears.
  2. Look at the buttons — check none is sitting lower or higher than the rest, or feels sticky when pressed and released.
  3. Wipe around the buttons with a barely damp cloth to shift any dried detergent, and let it dry before switching on.
  4. Make sure nothing is leaning against or resting on the control panel (a laundry basket on top is a common one).

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
