What E44 actually means
The machine can no longer tell reliably whether the door is shut, so it stops the cycle and empties the drum for safety.
The control board watches a signal from the door-closed sensing circuit — one pattern when the door is latched, a different steady reading when it is open. If the reading sits outside either of those for more than a second or so, the board decides it cannot trust the door state and raises E44. Because it can no longer guarantee the door is locked, it runs a safety drain to empty the machine before it will let the door open, and switching off at the wall won't clear it — a power cut only makes it start the drain again from the beginning. The alarm goes when the current cycle is reset, or by pressing Start/Pause once the safety drain has finished.
What E44 looks like on a Electrolux washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux washer dryer, E44 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Door interlock unit worn or failing, so the latch signal is wrong even with the door shut
- Door not fully latching — a stiff catch, or laundry pushed against the seal
- Damaged or chafed wiring between the door lock and the control board
- Fault in the door-lock sensing circuit on the main control board itself
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Push the door firmly shut and listen for the catch to engage — if it feels slack or springy, that's worth mentioning to the engineer
- Check nothing is trapped in the door seal or hanging over the lip of the drum, and that the load isn't overpacked against the glass
- Let the safety drain finish, then reset the cycle (or press Start/Pause at the end of the drain) to see whether the code returns on the next wash
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on — bear in mind this will restart the safety drain rather than clear the fault
Which Electrolux models show E44
E44 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Electrolux E44
What does E44 mean on a Electrolux washer dryer?
Can I fix Electrolux E44 myself?
There are 4 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Push the door firmly shut and listen for the catch to engage — if it feels slack or springy, that's worth mentioning to the engineer.
- Check nothing is trapped in the door seal or hanging over the lip of the drum, and that the load isn't overpacked against the glass.
- Let the safety drain finish, then reset the cycle (or press Start/Pause at the end of the drain) to see whether the code returns on the next wash.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on — bear in mind this will restart the safety drain rather than clear the fault.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E44?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed.
