What E74 actually means

The sensor that measures the water temperature in your washer dryer isn't reading properly — the machine can't confirm the water is heating, so it carries on washing cold.

During a heated wash, the control board watches the water temperature sensor (the wash NTC) on the tub and expects the temperature to climb by a set amount within a set time. If it doesn't — typically because the sensor has come out of its correct position on the tub and is no longer in contact with the water — the machine flags E74 and skips all further heating. Note that this alarm deliberately survives being switched off: you have to reset the running cycle, or press start/pause at the end of the cycle, to clear it.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Reset the current cycle rather than turning the machine off at the wall — this fault is designed not to clear on a power-off, so a power cycle proves nothing
If the code appeared at the end of a cycle, press start/pause to clear the alarm, then run a short hot wash and feel whether the door glass warms up at all
Check whether cold-only or rinse programmes still run normally — that tells the engineer a lot before they arrive
