The control panel has lost or corrupted the stored settings that tell it what each programme on the dial does, so it won't let a cycle start.

When that data area is missing or damaged, the interface can no longer work out which cycle you've chosen and blocks the start. The machine isn't reporting a fault with the drum, pump or heater — it's a data fault on the electronics, so nothing you do at the dial will make it accept the programme.
