The control chip on the machine's front panel has failed its own self-check, so the panel electronics are reporting themselves as faulty.

If that check fails, Electrolux logs E87 against the interface and marks its memory as faulty. It is stored as a warning rather than flashed up on the display, so most owners only ever see it when an engineer reads the machine's fault log, or notice it indirectly through buttons, the selector or the display behaving oddly.
