Electrolux E84 washer dryer: what it means & what to check

What E84 actually means

The control board has spotted a problem with the electronic switch that runs the recirculation pump, so it has abandoned the cycle, drained the drum for safety and released the door.

Inside the main control board is a small electronic switch (a triac) that turns the recirculation pump on and off, and the board constantly reads back a signal to confirm what that switch is doing. On E84 the signal coming back is outside the range the board expects, so it cannot trust the pump circuit. Rather than carry on, it runs a safety drain and unlocks the door. It will let you clear it with the start/pause button, by resetting the cycle, or by switching the machine off — but if the underlying fault is still there it will come straight back.

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and start a short cycle to see whether the code returns straight away
Clear the drain filter and check the drain hose is not kinked or trapped, so the safety drain can empty properly
Note whether the code appears at the same point each time — that is genuinely useful information for the engineer
