Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F05 actually means

The oven has detected that it's got too hot inside and has shut the heating down to protect itself.

F05 (sometimes shown as F105) is a high-temperature alarm. The oven's temperature probe is reporting a reading above the safe limit, so the control board cuts the heating and locks out the programme. It's either genuinely overheating, or the probe is giving a false high reading.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty oven temperature probe giving a false high reading
  • Cooling fan not running, so heat builds up around the controls
  • Heating element or its relay stuck on and not switching off
  • Loose or damaged connection at the temperature probe
  • Control board fault

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the oven off at the wall for a couple of minutes, then switch back on and see if the code returns
  2. Let the oven cool right down completely before trying again
  3. Check the vents around the oven and the gap above the door aren't blocked by foil, trays or tea towels
  4. Make sure nothing is covering the oven fan outlet inside the cavity

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
