Grundig E04 hob: what it means & what to check

What E04 actually means

The hob has lost a sensible reading from the temperature sensor attached to one of its induction coils, so it shuts that zone (or the whole hob) down rather than heat without knowing how hot it is.

Each induction coil has a small temperature sensor (an NTC) bonded to it, and the control board watches it constantly to stop the coil and the glass overheating. E04 means the reading from the fixed coil sensor is missing or out of range — usually an open or shorted circuit rather than genuine overheating. Because the board has no reliable temperature feedback, it refuses to power the coil, and you typically see the code appear as soon as you try to bring that zone up to heat.

What E04 looks like on a Grundig hob

What usually causes it

The coil temperature sensor's plug has worked loose or corroded at the control board
A damaged or chafed sensor cable under the hob
A failed coil NTC sensor itself
A fault on the main board so it misreads the sensor
Heat damage after a prolonged overheat or a spill running underneath the glass

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the hob off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on — if the code was a one-off glitch it may clear
Let the hob cool completely before retrying, especially if a pan had been boiling dry
Try the other cooking zones: if only one zone throws the code, that narrows it down for the engineer and is worth mentioning when you book
