Hisense E04 washer dryer: what it means & what to check

What E04 actually means

The machine has got too hot inside during the drying part of the cycle and has shut the heater down to protect itself.

E04 is system overheating, and the first thing it tells you to do is clean the filter. Nearly always that's an airflow problem rather than an electrical one — the hot air can't get through the fluff filter or condenser fast enough, heat builds up around the heater, and the safety cut-out trips and stops the cycle. Washing is usually unaffected; it's the drying phase where it shows up.

What E04 looks like on a Hisense washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hisense washer dryer, E04 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Machine door won't open
Door won't lock or click shut
Door lock light flashing
Door stuck shut with the load inside
Won't start even with the door closed
Machine not draining

What usually causes it

Fluff filter clogged with lint from previous loads
Condenser or its filter blocked with matted fluff
Machine installed somewhere too warm or too enclosed, so it can't draw cool air
Overloaded drum, or a load too damp for the drying programme selected
Faulty temperature sensor or overheat cut-out reading incorrectly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Take out the fluff filter, clear all the lint off it, rinse it under the tap if it feels furry or greasy, and dry it before refitting
Check the condensate drain hose isn't kinked or trapped behind the machine
Make sure nothing is blocking the air vents and that the machine isn't boxed in tightly or sat in a very warm cupboard
Let it cool for half an hour with the door open, then switch off at the wall for a minute and restart on a drying cycle
Try a smaller load — a full drum of soaking wet washing on a long dry is a common trigger
