What E46 actually means

The machine has lost the drum light — the lamp that comes on inside when you open the door isn't working, and the control board has flagged it.

The fault puts 46 down as a drum lighting error, and the symptom that goes with it is exactly what you'd expect: open the door and the inside of the drum stays dark. Nothing to do with washing, heating, drying or draining is affected — the electronics have noticed the lamp circuit isn't behaving and logged it. Drying carries on normally; the code is a nuisance flag rather than a stop.

What E46 looks like on a Hisense washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hisense washer dryer, E46 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • The drum lamp itself has failed
  • A loose or corroded connection at the lamp
  • A fault in the wiring between the lamp and the control board
  • Control board no longer able to read the lamp circuit correctly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the socket for a minute, then switch it back on — if the code was a one-off glitch it will clear
  2. Start a programme and check whether everything else runs as it should; if it does, the fault really is confined to the light
  3. If you want the machine usable in the meantime, select a timed drying programme as normal — the code doesn't prevent it

Which Hisense models show E46

E46 means the same thing on all 8 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
