What F29 actually means
The machine has decided the steam heater isn't doing anything, so it has stopped the programme rather than carry on without it.
Miele washer dryers with a steam function use a separate heating unit to generate steam, and the control board watches for a temperature rise once it calls for it. If nothing happens in the time expected, the control logs F29 as "steam heater inactive" and halts. It is a fault in the steam side of the machine, not the normal wash heating \u2014 that has its own code.
What F29 looks like on a Miele washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Miele washer dryer, F29 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle
- Not drying
- Blowing cold air
- Clothes still damp at the end
- Takes hours to dry
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Failed steam heating unit
- Scale or blockage in the steam water path
- Faulty temperature sensor on the steam unit
- Wiring or connection fault between the steam heater and the control board
- Control electronics not switching the steam heater on
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try the programme again \u2014 a one-off glitch will clear, a real fault will come straight back
- Check the water supply tap is fully open and the inlet hose isn't kinked behind the machine
- Try a programme without the steam option; if that runs normally it confirms the fault is confined to the steam system
