Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F53 actually means

The machine has lost the signal that tells it how fast the drum is turning, so it stops rather than run the motor blind.

Miele's control board relies on a speed sensor on the motor to confirm the drum is turning at the rate it asked for. When that feedback disappears or reads nonsense, the board can no longer control wash rotation or spin safely, so it halts the programme and flags F53. Typically you'll see the cycle stall with water still in the drum, or the drum barely turning while the machine otherwise seems alive.

What F53 looks like on a Miele washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Miele washer dryer, F53 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty speed sensor (tacho) on the motor
  • Loose or damaged plug or wiring between the motor and control board
  • Worn motor brushes or a failing motor, where fitted
  • Control electronics not reading the sensor signal correctly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear
  2. If the drum was heavily loaded or the washing had bunched to one side, take some out and redistribute the rest before restarting
  3. Check nothing is jamming the drum by hand — it should turn freely when the machine is switched off

Common questions about Miele F53

What does F53 mean on a Miele washer dryer?

The machine has lost the signal that tells it how fast the drum is turning, so it stops rather than run the motor blind. Miele's control board relies on a speed sensor on the motor to confirm the drum is turning at the rate it asked for. When that feedback disappears or reads nonsense, the board can no longer control wash rotation or spin safely, so it halts the programme and flags F53. Typically you'll see the cycle stall with water still in the drum, or the drum barely turning while the machine otherwise seems alive.

Can I fix Miele F53 myself?

There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear.
  2. If the drum was heavily loaded or the washing had bunched to one side, take some out and redistribute the rest before restarting.
  3. Check nothing is jamming the drum by hand — it should turn freely when the machine is switched off.
