What E01 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start or carry on.

Worn or sticking door catch and striker plate
Failed door interlock (the part that locks the door and tells the board it's locked)
Loose or damaged wiring at the interlock, or a control board fault

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Open the door and close it again firmly until you hear it click.
Check nothing is caught in the seal or hanging over the door edge \u2014 a towel corner or bra strap is enough to hold the door off its catch.
Take out some washing if the drum is packed tight and the door is being pushed back open.
Look at the striker on the door and the recess it sits in \u2014 if the catch is visibly broken or the door drops as you close it, that's your answer and it needs replacing.
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme.
