What E03 actually means

The fridge's control board has lost a sensible reading from one of the temperature sensors inside the cabinet, so it can no longer control the cooling properly.

Each compartment has a small temperature probe that tells the main board how cold it is. On the Montpellier fridge freezers this code appears on, E03 is logged when the board sees a reading from one of those probes that is outside any believable range — usually because the wire or plug at the board has come loose, or the probe itself has failed. The compressor and fans may keep running to a default pattern, but the compartment temperature is no longer being properly regulated.

What E03 looks like on a Montpellier fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier fridge freezer, E03 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should
  • Not cooling
  • Freezer not freezing
  • Ice building up at the back
  • Food going off in the fridge
  • Running constantly and never getting cold

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or dirty plug where the sensor wire meets the main control board
  • The temperature probe itself has failed or gone open circuit
  • Damaged or chafed sensor wiring inside the cabinet
  • A faulty main control board misreading a perfectly good sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on — an occasional one-off reading will clear and not return
  2. Check food isn't packed against the back wall or blocking the air vents, and that the doors are closing and sealing fully
  3. Put a fridge thermometer in each compartment for a few hours so you know whether it is actually still holding temperature, or only showing the code

Which Montpellier models show E03

E03 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
