Montpellier E09 fridge freezer: what it means & what to try

What E09 actually means

The freezer has warmed up beyond the point the control board is happy with, and it is flagging a high-temperature alarm to tell you your frozen food is at risk.

The control board watches the freezer sensor, and if that sensor reports the compartment is warmer than about -10°C it puts E09 on the display along with the alarm. Some models show it as "LF" (low freezing) instead of, or as well as, the code. The appliance keeps trying to cool — it is a warning rather than a shutdown — but until the cause is dealt with the freezer will not hold temperature. If the fridge side is warm too, these boards go on to show E11 or E09 together with E10, so what else is displayed is worth noting.

What E09 looks like on a Montpellier fridge freezer

What usually causes it

A door left ajar or a worn door seal letting warm, damp air in
A large load of fresh or warm food put in at once, or the freezer overfilled so air cannot circulate
Frost or packaging blocking the internal air vents that feed cold air round the compartment
A failed defrost heater or sensor, so the evaporator ices up and airflow stops
Faulty freezer temperature sensor reporting the wrong value, or a fan or cooling system fault

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Check the freezer door is closing fully and the seal is clean and not torn — grease or crumbs on the gasket are enough to hold it open a fraction.
Make sure nothing is jammed against the air vents inside the freezer, and take out enough to let air move round the compartment.
If you have recently loaded a lot of food, give it a few hours and switch Super Freeze on if your model has it, then see whether the alarm clears.
Look for a heavy build-up of frost on the back wall of the freezer. If there is, empty it and let it defrost fully with the door open, then restart it.
Check it is not standing tight against a wall or next to a heat source, and that the room is not unusually warm.
Turn it off at the socket for a minute and back on to clear a latched alarm — but move your food somewhere cold first if it is starting to soften.
