What E05 actually means
The fridge freezer has lost a reliable reading from one of its internal temperature sensors — on most models in this range, the defrost sensor on the freezer evaporator.
The control board constantly reads a small sensor that tells it how cold the freezer evaporator is, so it knows when to run a defrost cycle. If that reading goes out of range or disappears altogether, the board flags E05 and falls back on a fixed timed routine. The appliance will often carry on cooling, but defrosting may be poorly controlled, so you can get ice build-up and a gradual loss of performance.
What usually causes it
- A loose or corroded plug where the sensor connects to the control board
- A failed sensor giving a false reading
- Moisture or frost getting into the sensor connection
- A faulty main control board (less common)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on — some models clear a one-off glitch this way
- Check the doors are closing and sealing properly, as warm damp air causes heavy frosting
- Look for a thick build-up of ice around the back wall inside the freezer, which points to a defrost problem
- Make sure food or packaging is not blocking the vents inside the compartments
- Note the temperature the freezer is actually holding, so you can tell the engineer
