New World E01 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E01 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start — or it decided the door came unlocked partway through a programme and stopped.

Before anything else happens, the control board waits for the door interlock to report that it is latched. On these New World washer dryers E01 covers both halves of that check: the lock never engaging in the first place, and the lock signal dropping out once a programme is already running. Either way the machine stops rather than tumbling or filling with the door potentially free to open.

What E01 looks like on a New World tumble dryer

What usually causes it

Door not pushed fully home, or laundry caught in the seal holding it slightly open
Worn or sticking door catch and striker plate, so the latch no longer sits properly
Failed door interlock — the commonest actual finding when the door itself shuts fine
Loose or chafed wiring to the interlock, which drops the signal mid-cycle and gives the "door unlocked during programme" version of the code
Control board fault falsely reading the lock as open

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Open the door, take a couple of items out if it is packed tight, and close it firmly — you should hear it click
Run a finger round the door seal and rim to check nothing (a sock, a wire from a bra) is trapped in the catch area
Look at whether the door sits flush when closed or has dropped slightly on its hinge — if it has to be forced, the catch is worn
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme
If the code appears part way through a wash rather than at the start, note that — it points somewhere different and is worth mentioning when you book a visit
