Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E04 actually means

The dryer's control board has lost the electrical connection to the heat pump compressor — the part that generates the heat — so it stops the programme rather than tumbling cold.

On these heat pump machines the compressor is what heats the air that dries your washing. When the board sends power to it and gets nothing back from the compressor circuit, it reads that as a disconnected compressor connector and shuts the cycle down. Typically the drum will still turn or the machine will start normally, then stop early with the load barely warm and still damp.

What E04 looks like on a New World tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a New World tumble dryer, E04 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not drying
  • Blowing cold air
  • Clothes still damp at the end

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A compressor connector that has worked loose or is not fully seated
  • Damaged or chafed wiring in the compressor circuit
  • A failed compressor or its starting components
  • The machine wedged too tightly into a gap, putting strain on internal parts
  • A fault on the main control board misreading the compressor circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short programme — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear
  2. Clean the door filter and the lower heat pump filter/condenser filter, as a heavily blocked machine works harder than it should
  3. Check the dryer is standing level and is not jammed hard against cabinets or a wall, and that nothing is pressing on the sides or base
  4. Pull the machine forward slightly so air can move freely around the back and vents

Which New World models show E04

E04 means the same thing on all 14 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
