What E16 actually means

The machine has seen the drying air get hotter than it should and has shut the cycle down to protect itself.

In New the fault, E16 is logged as a high temperature error. The control board watches the temperature sensor on the drying side, and if the reading climbs past the safe limit — or climbs far too quickly — it cuts the cycle and shows the code rather than carrying on heating. In practice it is almost always a heat problem rather than a wiring problem: the heat is being made but not carried away.

What usually causes it

Blocked or clogged lint filter starving the machine of airflow
Fluff or debris restricting the air path or condenser area
Machine wedged in a tight space or vent hose kinked, so hot air cannot escape
Faulty drying temperature sensor reading falsely high
Heating element or its control staying on when it should switch off

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Let the machine cool right down before doing anything else — a hot cycle will often re-trigger the code straight away.
Take out the lint filter, rinse it and let it dry fully; a film of fabric softener residue blocks air even when the filter looks clean.
If your model has a vent hose, check it isn't kinked, crushed behind the machine or blocked at the outside end.
Make sure there is a gap behind and around the machine and that it isn't drawing in its own hot exhaust in a cupboard.
Turn it off at the wall for a minute, switch back on and run a short drying cycle with a light load to see if the code returns.
