What E23 actually means
The control board has found that the display board is running the wrong software for this machine, so it refuses to start a cycle.
On these New World washer-dryers the display/LCD board and the main control board each carry their own software, and they have to match the model they're fitted to. E23 is raised when the main board reads the LCD board's software and finds it isn't the correct version for the appliance — the two can't work together, so the machine stops rather than run a programme it can't control. It's a mismatch fault, not a mechanical one: nothing is blocked, worn or leaking.
What E23 looks like on a New World tumble dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a New World tumble dryer, E23 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Leaking
- Water on the floor
- Puddle underneath
- Shuts itself down and won't restart
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A replacement display or control board fitted with the wrong software version
- A software update or reprogramming that didn't complete correctly
- Corrupted software on the display board after a power interruption
- A faulty display board reporting the wrong version to the main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — occasionally the boards re-read each other cleanly and the code clears
- If the code came up straight after a repair or a board change, mention that to whoever attended, as it points directly at the software fitted
Which New World models show E23
E23 means the same thing on all 12 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
