What E17 actually means

The sensor that tells the machine how hot the air in the drum is during drying has stopped giving a sensible reading, so the drying side shuts down.

On these New World washer-dryers, E17 is logged as a dryer NTC fault \u2014 the NTC being the small temperature sensor the control board relies on to manage the drying heat. If the reading it sends back is out of range, open or short, the board has no safe way to control the heater and stops the dry cycle rather than guess. The wash side of the machine is usually unaffected, so people often report that clothes come out washed but soaking wet with the code showing at the end.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short drying programme \u2014 an occasional one-off reading will clear
Make sure the machine isn't crammed into a hot, unventilated cupboard, as poor airflow around it makes drying faults more likely to be flagged
Clean any accessible filter and check the drain hose isn't kinked, so you can rule out a poor drain leaving loads too wet before assuming the sensor
